The foundation for this midnight blue dining room are walls of stamped leather in blues, reds, greens and golds specially commissioned by Alidad. The Eastern inspired tree design helps to elongate the walls, pulling the eye upwards to a painted trompe l’oeil of a coffered ceiling. This too makes the room appear much bigger than it is. The vertical plane is further accentuated by high-backed chairs and antique candelabra. Tall mirrors also pull the eye in and up, casting further reflections of candlelight through an already seductively atmospheric room.

Dining rooms are places you can let the imagination run wild, because they are used mainly at night. Here the whole room appears to be candlelit, but in reality there is a layer of concealed lighting, which adds to the magic and mystery of this womb-like space. One of the wonderful qualities of leather is it changes so much according to light, taking on a different look according to one’s vantage point. Its opulence is enhanced by wonderful textures, such as the rich damask, silver, crystal and gilt.
