“A large scale piece can completely transform the look of a room, as with this tapestry chosen for its elaborately styled foliage.”

A combination of old fabrics from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries married with modern textiles in sympathetic hues is the foundation for this glorious yellow drawing room.

In this modest-sized, Parisian apartment, Alidad wanted to create the illusion of more height in the room. The solution lay in finding an 18th-century tapestry, with fantastic stylised foliage that pulls the eye upwards, to cover one entire wall. So as not to distract from its effect, a plain golden velvet was chosen for the sofa in front, but to add interest this is buttoned and fringed in the French manner. Other antique textiles include the raised velvet cushions, which date from the 19th century, and the needlework appliqué on the adjacent chair which also dates from the 19th century but is based on a 17th-century design. The cloth on the round table is one of Alidad’s own designs. The carpet is also new, but produced in old colours that are sympathetic to the look. This confident mix of colour, pattern and texture creates a rich depth of decoration, which is further enhanced by wonderful lighting at night. The tapestry, for example, is lit by mirrored sconces, which create a further layer of magic.
