“I am not interested in what the colours of today are because they will be gone by tomorrow. My colours are based on 17th century and 18th century textiles - that is why all the fabrics in my rooms work comfortably together.”

LibraryAlidad believes in creating designs that have something timeless in their essence.

The Red Library very much represents this philosophy; it is a room Alidad designed from scratch a number of years ago, but there is no reason
why it will not still look wonderful in fifty years time. It is just a matter of giving it a gentle tweak every ten years or so.

Alidad loves using layers of colours, textures and patterns to achieve a womb-like feeling. An important feature of the Red Library is the part stencilled, part hand-painted ceiling and walls. So many people loved it that he designed a hand-printed special edition wallpaper, Opium, that is based loosely on its design. It can be ordered in any colour. The wonderful thing about wallpaper as opulent as this is that it immediately provides an old, established atmosphere - add your own furniture and fabrics and the room will look as if it has magically come together over time.
